You can’t deny the ongoing popularity of Pokemon for children between the ages of 4 and 10. Pokemon toys, games, videos and more have been around for many years now, and they remain one of the most popular themes for birthday parties.
No surprise, most kids are huge fans of Ash and his trusty companion, Pikachu, but the world of Pokemon is vast, with lots of great characters for making an excellent Pokemon birthday party.
Pokemon Party Supplies
Every superhero birthday party starts with party supplies! And a Pokemon birthday party is no different. You can find a ton of Pokemon party supplies – like this great Pokemon Ultimate Party Pack – at party stores and online, including Pokemon party invitations, Pokemon party favors, Pokemon party decorations and more.
A great idea is to get a Pokemon Mylar Balloon. It makes for a great centerpiece item at any Pokemon birthday party.
Pokemon Party Invitations
Certainly you can find Pokemon birthday invitations at party stores. Or maybe even your local dollar store. But making your own invitations is more fun, and a great activity for involving your child.
The simplest thing to do is buy white blank invitation cards. You can print a picture of your child on the front of the cards, and then decorate them with Pokemon images and stickers.
The invitations can read “(Guest name), I choose you…to come to my __th Pokemon Birthday Party! Go with me and train to be a Pokemon Master! There will be plenty of Pokemon to catch at (address) on (date) from (time). Be sure to call (phone number) for directions and to reserve your spot!”
As a variation, you can purchase Pokemon activity books and get the birthday child to color the pages. Then take the pages out, fold them in half, and write Pokemon birthday party details in between images. Voila! You have pretty original invitations!

Pokemon Cakes
The centerpiece of most birthday is the cake! And there’s an absolute ton of variety and fun you can have with Pokemon cakes. Even making a simple chocolate cake and placing Pokemon figurines on it is a great way to have a personalized Pokemon birthday experience.
Or instead, make some simple cupcakes, color them to resemble Poke balls and put a small Pokemon character on each one. Your guests will love their personalized Pokemon cupcakes! Here’s a great example of Pokemon cupcakes from Barb. The Jensen family took this idea one step further and made Pokemon cake lollipops (directions provided). The result is so incredible that we had to share it. It looks like these Pokemon cake lollipops were made in a professional bake shop!
Possible the most elaborate Pokemon cake we’ve seen so far is from Rose Gianopoulis, who spent 2 days making a cake for her grandson. Interestingly, it’s not of Pikachu, but of Infernape, certainly a less popular Pokemon character. But it’s great to see! (And in case you’re wondering, Infernape is the evolution of Chimchar.) Here are Rose’s comments from her blog post on the experience:
It was a two day process because I had to make the figure of Infernate from Non toxic “Model Magic”. I made a cross frame to start with then added wires twisted around the wood frame for arms, legs and a tail. I started with fondant but it was too soft to hold on to the the wires. The “Model Magic” was awesome.
Next I made the Pokemon Ball. Rolled fondant into a ball. Airbrushed half orange the other half silver. Black band of fondant and a white latch in the center. This took no time at all.
I made a two layer cakes: 12″ half chocolate and half vanilla and a 6″ vanilla for the 2ND layer. Iced in butter cream frosting and then the fun began.

And Pokemon birthday parties are certainly not exclusively for boys! Here’s a great Pokemon birthday cake for Laura (who was turning 6 years old).

Pokemon Party Favors
Printables are always a great idea as party favors. You can print out a variety of characters and hand the Pokemon printables out in Pokemon loot bags.
Since Pikachu is the favorite Pokemon for most kids, here’s a great Pikachu printable you can use, courtesy of Printables4Kids:

Pokemon Games & Activities
Every kid that gets into Pokemon wants to become the greatest Pokemon trainer ever! And what do great Pokemon trainers do? They find and catch Pokemon of course…
So now it’s time to play, Catch the Pokemon!
Catch the Pokemon can be played inside or outside, but it’s more fun outside where kids can run around and find Pokemon hidden in their natural habitat. You’ll need some Pokemon figurines or some simple Pokemon pictures (or drawings). Hide the Pokemon nearby and then give each child a loot bag to catch their Pokemon. You’ll also want to equip each child with a Poke ball.
To make Poke balls purchase some light, hollow plastic balls and cover them in white cloth or paper. Draw a red circle on them, with a black outline and a white or yellow circle inside the bigger white one.
The kids can then run around, throw their Poke balls at the hidden Pokemon and put them in their loot bags. When all the Pokemon have been found, the kids can get together, show off the Pokemon they found, trade them and collect extras (that you’ve got stored away, in case some kids don’t find enough.)
