Ultimate Guide to a Great Harry Potter Birthday Party

With the recent release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter parties are some of the most popular. Harry Potter is growing up, and so are your kids, so it’s not likely that you’ll have anyone under the age of 8 that’s interested in a Harry Potter party. But for kids between the ages of 8 and 12, a Harry Potter birthday party is a smash! After all, you might be a lowly Muggle, but your child is a Wizard Superstar!

Harry Potter Party Supplies

Get equipped quickly with all the latest Harry Potter party supplies: Harry Potter Deluxe Party Pack. It’s easy to load up on Harry Potter party goods, from plates, napkins and cups, to balloons and streamers.

A must-have for any superhero party is the tablecloth. At my son’s recent party he loved his because it had all the individual characters on it. For your child’s Harry Potter birthday it’s no different: Harry Potter Tablecover – this will be just perfect!

Harry Potter Invitations

The invitation is the “first impression” you make with your superhero party. So now’s the time to find the best Harry Potter invitations you can!

Becky in Virginia decided to make her own Harry Potter party invitations. And it sounds like they were incredible! Plus, Becky reminds us that a Harry Potter party is perfectly suitable for a 16-year old!

Harry Potter Cakes

The birthday cake is key to any successful birthday party. Let’s face it, you want that cake to stand out and shine! A great way to do that is with a Harry Potter Cake Kit – just click on the image to the left. That’s the fastest way to get everything you need to make a simple Harry Potter birthday cake.

Here are some other awesome Harry Potter birthday cakes for you to enjoy:

Harry Potter cakeTamara from Defining Wellness gave us permission to use her Harry Potter cake image which is an incredible wizard’s hat for her husband’s 27th birthday! Just proves that a Harry Potter party isn’t just for kids; but you could certainly use this birthday cake for kids. The cake was professionally made, but we do think it would be possible to pull off something similar at home. The icing is always the biggest challenge, but if you can get the shape right, I think you could simplify the icing and decorations but still have a great Wizard Hat Cake.

Harry Potter Decorations

It’s easy to get carried away with crazy party decorations, but we want to make sure you can get this done simply and quickly! There’s certainly no shortage of Harry Potter decoration ideas:

  • Get poster board and draw on the Harry Potter house symbols
  • Fake spiderweb on light fixtures and across chairs
  • Red and gold colored balloons (those are the Gryffindor colors)
  • Buy a black plastic cauldron — XXX — and fill it with candy at the front door
  • Add a broomstick for that added, witches-flair!
  • Make Harry Potter signs – “The Great Woods” for outdoors, “The Great Hall” for the kitchen and “The Dungeon” for your basement

Minerva in Seattle planned an incredible Harry Potter party that included plastic insects and creatures in jars with colored water.

Harry Potter decoration drink labelsMitzi has some other great Harry Potter party ideas collected at her site. My favorite idea is the free printable labels for soda bottles. It looks like she created these “Butter Beer” labels that look perfect for a Harry Potter birthday party. The labels look so authentic and add a truly fine, unique touch to any birthday party event.

Incidentally, if your son or daughter is really, really, really into Harry Potter and Harry Potter decorations, you might want to theme their entire room. Of course, this would be a permanent Harry Potter theme, but we just couldn’t resist sharing this with you: Harry Potter theme room.

Harry Potter Party Favors

No Harry Potter loot bag is complete without colored jelly beans! Don’t forget to label each bag, “B.Botts Many Flavored Beans” (don’t worry: the kids will know what it means!)

And don’t forget the Harry Potter glasses too. You might want to make these beforehand and put them in the loot bag, or make them as an activity.

Harry Potter Games & Activities

There are tons of great Harry Potter craft ideas that you can use for your birthday party. Crafts are a great way of keeping kids in one place, seated (no running with the scissors!) and somewhat under control. Plus kids love getting their hands dirty with crafts, building and creating fun stuff that they can then take home in their Harry Potter loot bags.

Here’s a great resource page for Harry Potter crafts.

One of the simplest ideas is the printable Harry Potter ties. Imagine each child at the party getting to create their own tie, pick the color they want, join a house and then wear the tie during the party. Tons of fun!

For the girls attending your Harry Potter birthday, try these crystal ball necklaces. They recommend this craft for 8 years or older. It’s easy to do with a minimum amount of things needed.

If you’re not afraid of using a bit of glue, here’s a great idea: Wizard Toilet Paper Roll Craft. Each child can customize their own wizard.
